Top 5 Coldest Cities in the World

Is it New York City? Perhaps Toronto? Hong Kong? London? Well, it's not London, England, as cool as fish and chips, Chelsea FC and the Queen may be. It's not Hong Kong, either, no matter how many shopping districts and diners you may find open at 4 a.m.

The coolest on place on earth, in the entire world is in fact -- a desert. Huh?

Here we go:

1) Vostok Station and Plateau Station, Antarctica
How Cool? Vostok: -128.6°F or -89.2°C and Plateau: -119.2°F or -84°C
Antarctica is considered the coolest or coldest place on earth, inhabited only by seals, penguins and scientists for half of the year. It's also considered a desert (the largest desert in the world!) because it has little precipitation (just less than the Sahara) -- even though it's completely covered by massive amounts of ice.

The records of the coldest temperatures in the world were taken at the Vostok and Plateau Science Laboratory Stations on Antarctica. The "coolest place" award goes to Vostok Station where the temperature reached -128.6°F or -89.2°C on July 21, 1983.

2) Oymyakon and Verkhoyansk, Russia
How Cool? Oymyakon: -96.0°F or -71.1°C and Verkhoyansk: -89.8°F or -67.7°C
Siberia is in fact the coldest inhabited place in the world. Oymyakon village found in Eastern Siberia, has a population of 900 and an average temperature of -96°F or -71.2°C during the winter that lasts nine months. This region is so cold that if you take out an empty plastic bag outside, it will freeze in minutes and shatter like glass. Children are not allowed to play outside for more than 20 minutes during a winter day -- to keep their lungs from freezing!

Verkhoyansk is located near the Arctic Circle and had a population of 1,434 in 2002. They have a river port, airport and fur-collecting depot. It is also a centre for raising reindeer (for Santa, no doubt).

3) North Ice Station and Eismitte, Greenland
How Cool? North Ice: -86.8°F or -66°C and Eismitte: -84.8°F or -64.9°C
Both recording of these temperatures at North Ice Station and Eismitte were on expeditions made by European scientists and explorers in the 1930s (Eismitte) and the 1950's (North Ice). Both were made on Greenland's inland. At Eismitte, researchers spent a 12 month period from September 1930 to August 1931 recording temperatures. July was the warmest month at an average monthly temperature of 10°F and -12.2°C. The coldest month was February at -53°F or -47.2°C.

4) Snag in Yukon, Canada
How Cool? -81.4°F or -63°C
The small village of Snag, Yukon takes the record for the coldest temperature in North America to have ever been recorded and was February 3, 1947. The village is located just south of Beaver Creek, Yukon and is located in a valley. This village was settled during the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1800s. In the mid 1900's, only approximately 10 natives lived here along with fur traders.

5) Prospect Creek, Alaska, United States
How Cool? -79.8°F or -62.1°C
Prospect Creek is located just 25 miles southeast from Bettles, Alaska. It was at a pipeline camp in January 23, 1971 that this record was taken at -79.8°F or -62.1°C. It is considered the United States' lowest recorded temperature.

Do you live at a place with much hustle and bustle? You think your city is getting too populated?

Sounds awkward, right? That’s the kind of extra-terrestrial chat on the internet about buying land on the Moon, something US-headquartered Lunar Embassy claims it first initiated.

It’s yet uncertain whether the statement is true or not, the company is selling and registering property on the Moon for the past 29 years. The website lets you know every step and detail regarding your Real Estate Purchase on moon. It also justifies itself that it’s not fraud!!!

It also claims it’s the only company to possess a legal basis and copyright for the sale of lunar and other extra-terrestrial property in the solar system. The organization claims it has over 3,470,072 members.

So, how did Lunar Embassy get the right to own, sell and register land on the Moon? A declaration of ownership was filed with the United Nations as well as the US and Russian governments 29 years ago by Dennis M Hope of the Lunar Embassy to ensure a legal basis for ownership of properties sold on the moon. No country has contested that claim or declaration.

Though the international Moon Treaty, finalized in 1979 and in force since 1984, forbids private ownership of extra-terrestrial real estate, as of January 1, 2008 only 13 states ratified the agreement and more importantly not a single country has legally contested Lunar Embassy’s claims to ownership of Moon land. Thus, anyone who made the first claim before the UN becomes the first owner. Lunar Embassy says it made the first claim and so it is the rightful owner of lunar property.

There’s another fact that Lunar Embassy is banking on. Although the Outer Space Treaty, which came into force in 1967 forbids countries from claiming celestial bodies, there apparently is no provision forbidding private individuals from doing so. In 1996, the company set up its website, the MoonShop, “the first Internet website ever to be selling properties on any extraterrestrial body”.

Choosing the Best Toys for Your Children

Toy safety is a top priority for parents, caregivers and our company. In this article we will discuss toy safety, identifying potential hazards in toys and provide tips for selecting the right toys for your child. Toys are an important part of play time and development. Knowing which toys are safe for your child will keep them healthy and happy.
Below is information to help parents and caregivers choose appropriate and safe toys.

Age Appropriate
Check each label for the age recommendation of the toy. Much of the risk associated with children s toys is age-dependent. Toys with accurate and appropriate age recommendations should always be selected. Small children have a tendency to put things in their mouth. Toys that contain small parts are a serious chocking hazard and should not be selected. Do not select toys meant for older children thinking that it will help your child to be more advanced. Not only can this lead to hazards such as choking, but it also can frustrate your child and foster negativity.
Always supervise playtime. This is especially critical for small children and children who have older siblings. Make sure that younger children are playing with the toys intended for them and not the toys of an older sibling which could be hazardous for them.

Safe, non-toxic
Selecting the right toy can seem overwhelming, but it doesn t have to be. Here are some tips for getting the right toy. Look at labels. You can learn a lot about the contents of a toy by reading the label. Choose non-toxic. All of our wooden toys are non-toxic, lead free and made with natural finishes. Look for toys that have the same qualities. Recently toy recalls have been made by the CPSC due to high lead content. Luckily none of our wood toys were part of this recall due to frequent and diligent testing. Although toy manufacturers have reacted responsibly to eliminating this threat, here are some ways to determine potential lead content. Lead can be found in plastics, vinyl, metals, and certain paints finishes. Read the labels on these items to check for any unhealthy chemicals and lead. If the label contains phthalates it should be avoided. Phthalates are harmful chemicals emitted from some plastics. Be sure to exclude these toys from your purchasing. Become familiar with who you purchase from and choose companies that share your beliefs on safe toys.
Look for reputable toy manufacturers that you can trust. Our manufactures comply with government safety regulations and undergo rigorous testing to ensure toy safety. Our wooden toys have been the recipients of the most prestigious toy awards and our manufacturers share our vigilance for safety. Manufacturers such as: Melissa and Doug, Plan Toys, Hape, and Imagiplay.
Avoid cheap toys that are not constructed well and easily breakable. It goes without saying that these kinds of products can lead to hazards such as chocking and injury, but cheap metals are also very likely to contain lead.

Use as Intended
Teach children to use their toys in the way they were intended. Being overly aggressive and misusing a toy can lead to hazards and breakage.

Use toys that are electric, or become hot only with adult supervision to avoid burns and electric shock. Age appropriate recommendations should especially be adhered to for these kinds of products.

Toy Maintenance
Inspecting your children s toys regularly is a great way to keep them safe. When examining each toy look for loose, or broken parts. Discard toys with sharp edges, chipping paint or other possible dangers. Consider replacing toys that cannot be fixed with new, safer products.
Toys that are well loved should be cleaned often. Here are some ways to ensure germ-free toys
1. Wash toys in hot, soapy water, rinse and dry
2. Colorfast toys can be soaked in a bleach solution of cup of household bleach in 1 gallon of water.
3. Lysol, or other disinfectant sprays can be used for daily maintenance.
Keeping an uncluttered play area is another great way to eliminate hazards and injury. Put some toys away and then rotate them in a few months. Not only will your play room be clean, but your child will think its Christmas all over again.

Selecting safe toys and identifying potential hazards is a great way to keep our kids safe. It is also important to not be afraid to let kids play. Don t stop your child from playing with toys. Keep the above recommendations in the forefront of your mind and you will select toys that are safe and fun. According to Dr. Toy Children need toys to learn, play, and develop mentally, socially and physically. Toys are a means for developing a child's PQ or Play Quotient, which is intelligent and responsible play that engages, educates, creates and is overall fun.
